Details about the disease
AMPN causes reduced stimulation of the peripheral nervous system, which is followed by nerve degeneration. This then leads to gradual muscle deterioration.
Clinical signs
Clinical signs usually occur during the first two years of a dog’s life and include exercise intolerance, inability to move all limbs and loss of reflexes. Dogs affected with the condition may fall down, have an abnormal gait or walk on the tops of its feet.
How is it inherited?
The disease is described as an autosomal-recessive condition. This means that a dog must inherit two copies of an abnormal gene (one from its mother and one from its father) before its health is affected.
