Litter Application Frequently Asked Questions
Ways to register your pedigree dog litter
There are two ways that breeders can now register their litters:
1. Registering your litter using the Online Litter Registration Service
The online system is the fastest way to register your litter. Step by step the online system takes you through the registration process that has been developed with all the usual rules associated with the registration of a litter. The system automatically advises you if the puppy name is already taken or if any registration details are entered incorrectly, this is subject to final validation by the Registrations Team.
Benefits of opening an Online Litter Registration Account include:
- Home Page, opportunity to have your own unique homepage listing
- View all dogs registered in your ownership
- Register litters online at anytime, at your convenience
- Dedicated Online Help-line via telephone or email
2. Registering your litter by completing the Application for Litter Registration (Form 1)
Please remember to complete all sections of form and return it to the Kennel Club. Application processing may take up to 14 days and so we kindly urge breeders to complete the application as early as possible to ensure the relevant registration documents are available for the puppies new owners at the time of sale.
Please note: failure to complete the application form and/or include the correct payment, will delay the registration process. Please refer to the guide notes and checklist which can be found on the application form to help you.
The Kennel Club General Code of Ethics
All breeders who register their puppies with the Kennel Club accept the jurisdiction of the Kennel Club and undertake to abide by its General Code of Ethics.
Additional Services available during litter registration:
Kennel Name
If you wish to register your litter using an exclusive word that is associated with you and your dogs then you would need to apply for a Kennel Name.
Assured Breeder
The Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme promotes good breeding practice and, as a breeder, you may wish to consider joining. There are 11 set requirements that Assured Breeders must agree to follow, which encourage the breeding of healthy, well adjusted puppies.
Dog Name Check online
When registering your litter you will have the opportunity to name your puppies. There are several rules relating to naming, which are contained on the litter application form 1 or can be viewed on the Puppy Litter Registration Q & A page.
With just over 20% of dog names being rejected it can be disheartened if you have spent hours choosing the names which are then not available as they conflict with an existing name already taken for the breed or an active Kennel Name.
The Dog Name Check tool allows you to check your names before applying, in order to improve your chances of getting your preferred choice of name. The tool is only a guide and the names will be subjected to further validation once submitted and we cannot guarantee they will be accepted.
Selling your puppies - Find A Puppy Service
Let the Kennel Club help you find suitable homes for your new puppies. Our Find a Puppy service provides contact details of breeders who currently have Kennel Club registered pedigree puppies for sale in the UK.
What happens when the litter is registered?
Once registered, you will receive individual registration papers (Breeder Registration Certificate pictured right) for each puppy. Please check the documents to ensure the details are correct, and then sign and pass to the new owner to enable them to transfer ownership.
Activating transfer of registered ownership
Once you have sold a puppy to the new owner, you should encourage them to transfer the registered ownership of the puppy into their name with the Kennel Club. As the breeder you need to sign the Transfer of Registered Ownership Form (all Breeders must sign if there is more than one) on the reverse of the Kennel Club Registration Certificate and the new owner must complete the rest of the form and either transfer ownership online or return to the Kennel Club.

Breed Registration Statistics
The Kennel Club publishes information on dog registrations received. This information is also published within the Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement available through the Online Shop.
Breed Records Supplement
The Kennel Club Breed Records Supplement (to the Stud Book) is a quarterly publication where all registration related applications are shown. Your puppies are automatically entered onto it when you register each one.
This includes litters, transfer or ownership, change of name, exported and imported dogs, health results and many other Kennel Club related transactions. These are listed per breed and published per breed group. All applications entered on our database within each quarter make up each edition.
The Supplement is available as a single copy or as a yearly subscription from the publications section within our Online Shop or from our Publications Department on 0844 463 3980. NOTE: The last three characters in a dog's registration number indicate in which issue the relevant details are published and when purchasing this publication at the time of an application, it will be dispatched at a later date and not with your registration document.
