Kay Attwood

Kay is a dog training instructor from Camberley in Surrey who runs regular training classes, behaviour consultations and workshops. She has been a KCAI Scheme member for six years and is working towards achieving accreditation as a Kennel Club Accredited Instructor.

We caught up with Kay to find out a little more about her involvement in the canine world….

Kay started volunteering at a dog training school in 2005 and quickly became hooked on instructing. She attended training schools prior to that with her own dogs and thoroughly enjoyed it.   She said “I was the main ‘dog trainer in the family even as a young girl.”

Kay loves watching a positive relationship develop between a dog and its owner, as they both get a better understanding of each other and learn how to effectively communicate. She says that her proudest achievement as a dog training instructor is having an impact on an owner and their dog with no understanding of each other at all (which results in various unwanted behaviours on both sides) and changing that for the better so that they can live in harmony with each other.  She believes success is achieving results, where a dog owner loves having the dog in their life with no feeling of regrets or burden.

When asked about any additional work on top of being a dog training instructor and running regular classes Kay said: “I sponsor lots of local dog events, supplying rosettes for dog shows and judging fun days and work free of charge for various local rescues (behaviour and general training). I have regular college students doing work experience, I offer mentoring programmes and also speak at conferences for large dog training organisations.”

Kay has two dogs, Gibson, a 12 year old rescue Jack Russell cross Basenji, who has done various activities such as Agility, Flyball, Scent Work and tricks. And Flynn, an 11 year old Parsons Jack Russell cross Border Collie, who was a rescue but also participates in Agility and tricks.

Referring to her role as a dog training instructor, Kay also said: “I love to help people, so helping them with their dogs is right up my street and I get to do it daily! I love my job.  I play with dogs all day!  What’s not to love.”
