Training for Obedience Show Judges

The Kennel Club has been holding its Regulations & Judging Procedure Seminar and Examination since 2004, as part of its strategy to raise standards in all aspects of canine activity.

It is compulsory for anyone judging at an Open or Championship Obedience Show for the first time, or those nominated to judge Championship Class 'C' ("ticket" classes) for the first time, to have attended the Regulations & Judging Procedure Seminar and passed the examination. From 1 January 2015 it will also be compulsory for those judges assessing an Open or Championship Obedience Show for the first time, or those nominated to judge Championship Class 'C' ("ticket" classes) for the first time to have attended the Obedience Test Design and Practice of Judging Seminar .

Training seminars are held throughout the year and details for upcoming seminars can be found by clicking here. A list of accredited Obedience Trainers and Presenters who provide training for the seminars is also available and can be accessed via the Accredited Obedience Trainers page.

Hundreds of individuals have taken and passed the examination and the Kennel Club would like to congratulate these people who have demonstrated knowledge and commitment to the highest standards in Obedience. Full lists of all the successful candidates are available to download from the toolbar on the right hand side of this page.

Although the seminar and examination are required for first-time judges, there are additional criteria which must be met, and not all those listed as successful candidates will necessarily be fully qualified to judge. Further details about what is required of an Obedience Judge can be found in the Obedience Judges Section.

Societies are reminded they must ensure any judge they invite meets all the necessary criteria (listed in the Obedience Regulations G31). Judges are also reminded that they will be required when accepting an appointment to sign a declaration that they are qualified to judge.
