Before competing at a Kennel Club licensed dog show in the UK, exhibitors from overseas must obtain an authority to compete (ATC) registration number for each dog. Once the ATC number has been issued it will be valid for the life of the dog.

You may not enter any competitions in the UK until you have received your ATC number, and this number must be quoted on all entry forms. Failure to do so may result in your entry form being returned.

What is an authority to compete number?

Exhibitors from overseas who want to compete in any discipline in the UK must apply for an authority to compete registration number for each dog which will be valid for the life of the dog.

The ATC number must be used on all entry forms, and will include a reference to the dog's country of origin.

What do I need to do?

Your dog must be registered with a kennel club with which we have a reciprocal agreement, or which has full membership, associate membership or contract partnership of the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale).

You will be required to complete the application online and send a copy of your dog's ownership document and a three generation pedigree, issued by The Kennel Club with which the dog is registered. The ownership on the pedigree must be identical to the applicant as stated on the form.

Please ensure any copies sent are clear. Please ensure the files are jpg or pdf format to avoid delays. You must only submit the application once to prevent duplicate payments from being taken.

The Kennel Club will issue the applicant with a unique ATC number for that dog. This number will be required on all entry forms submitted by overseas competitors.

What do I need to submit?
  • Three generation pedigree (a photocopy is acceptable), issued by the overseas kennel club with which the dog is registered
  • The pedigree must show the name of the owner of the dog (the same as the person applying for the ATC)
  • Alternatively, a copy of the registration/transfer document to show that the dog is owned by the person applying for the ATC must be sent to The Kennel Club

On acceptance, the owner of a dog will receive an ATC number which, as well as being quoted on all entry forms, must also be quoted on all correspondence.

Exceptions

Dogs registered overseas which were originally registered with The Kennel Club do not require an ATC number, since we already have the information needed. Owners of these dogs should enter the dog's original registration number from The Kennel Club in place of the ATC number on all entry forms.

Eligibility

It is the exhibitor's responsibility to ensure that their dog is eligible for the class that they have entered, especially when calculating wins which count towards the title of champion.

Prior to exhibition, permission must be sought from The Kennel Club board to exhibit any dog which has undergone any operation to alter its natural conformation. Dogs which have been spayed or castrated are only permitted to be exhibited at Kennel Club licensed events if the owner has informed The Kennel Club, prior to exhibition, of:

  • the date of the operation
  • the name of the veterinary surgeon
  • the practice where the operation was carried out

Dogs with cropped ears are not eligible to compete at any event licensed by The Kennel Club.

Overseas exhibitors are reminded that The Kennel Club has the jurisdiction to investigate, and if necessary to penalise, any breaches of The Kennel Club regulations or complaints made under rule A42.

Rules and regulations

Kennel Club licensed dog shows in the UK must adhere to The Kennel Club rules and regulations, these can be found in The Kennel Club Year Book, which is available to buy from our online shop.

Importing from Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands

If your dog is registered with either the Irish Kennel Club, Guernsey Kennel Club or Kennel Club of Jersey, and is residing in the United Kingdom, you can apply for an import online using form 4 - application for the registration of an imported dog or if you prefer, you can download and complete a PDF version of form 4.

If you are continuing to reside in the dog’s registered country, but are applying to import to the UK for competition or exhibition purposes, there are two methods by which you can do this:

Dogs can only be fully imported if they reside in the UK. Conversely, dogs residing in the UK cannot receive an ATC number or be recorded for exhibition-only.

*Please note that if you can only supply a pedigree with four generations, you have the following options:

  • Select a three generation pedigree, with all four generations recorded on The Kennel Club’s system, but only three printed on the certificate
  • Select a five generation pedigree, with four generations recorded and printed, but the fifth column on the certificate being left incomplete

The ownership on the pedigree must be identical to the applicant as stated on the form. 9. My dog was registered by The Kennel Club, but now lives overseas. Do I need to apply for an ATC number?

No, if your dog was registered in the UK you would not require an ATC number. Please use the dog's UK registration name and number on the entries. The ownership of the dog would need to match the ownership with The Kennel Club. If this has changed, we would require copies of the overseas registration documents supplied with a covering letter so we can update the details.

10. My dog has an ATC number but the ownership has changed. Do I need to reapply?

No, the ATC number for the dog would stay the same, but we would need to update the owner's details. Please email your request through to us along with a scan/clear photo of the ownership certificate/pedigree confirming the ownership change.

Was muss ich tun?

Was muss ich einreichen?

Ausnahmen

Ausländisch registrierte Hunde, die ursprünglich beim The Kennel Club registriert waren, benötigen keine ATC-Nummer.

Cos’è un numero ATC (Authority To Compete)?

Quali informazioni devo fornire?
