Glasgow North West MP's dog wins Westminster Dog of the Year 2019 'Paw-blic' vote

There were celebrations in Glasgow today as Jean, a five-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Collie cross, belonging to Carol Monaghan, MP for Glasgow North West, emerged victorious after being voted for by the public in the annual Westminster Dog of the Year competition’s ‘paw-blic’ vote category.

Despite the annual event, organised by the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust, being cancelled due to safety concerns regarding the increase in protests around Parliament, the public still took to the polls in their thousands to crown the winner of the ‘paw-blic’ vote.

Jean showed she really is the people’s pooch after receiving a staggering number of votes via the Kennel Club’s website, beating 18 paw-litical opponents to be named as the top dog. The win followed a well-fought social media battle for victory, with MPs campaigning hard to canvas for votes from the public.

Carol and Jean were awarded the winning trophy today at the Glasgow North West constituency office by representatives from the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust.

Winning MP, Carol Monaghan, said of Jean: “We are delighted to win the ‘paw-blic’ vote. Jean has always been my biggest supporter so she deserves her time in the spotlight and is a worthy winner. The Westminster Dog of the Year competition is so important in highlighting dog welfare issues to Parliament. I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote for Jean and for all the support we received on social media.”

Second place was awarded to Bella and Mike Wood MP with Angela Rayner MP and her dog Luna in third place.
