The Kennel Club is holding an open tour for the dog-loving public

15th June 2018 - 12:14 PM

The Kennel Club has announced a tour of its London building on Thursday 28th June.

One of the key stops on the tour is the Kennel Club Art Gallery, where the current exhibition, ‘Significant Women, who have made a difference for dogs’, ties in with the centenary of women getting the right to vote.

The art exhibition focuses on twenty different women who made significant contributions to the world of dogs during their lifetimes, including Queen Victoria, the first monarch to compete and win at dog shows; founder of the PDSA, Maria Dickin; renowned canine artist, Maud Earl; Alice Stennard Robinson, creator of the Ladies Kennel Association; leading suffragette and a founder of the animal rights movement, Francis Power Cobbe; and Britain’s first female dog show judge, Mary Ann Foster, who stepped in to the judging ring in 1889.

Other highlights of the Kennel Club art collection include the unique opportunity to see the world famous Crufts Best in Show trophy, the Keddell Memorial Trophy, up close; a rare chance to view Sir Edwin Landseer’s ‘A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society’, currently on loan from the Tate; an extensive display of Crufts trophies, some of which have never been exhibited before; and prestigious pieces of art such as ‘Greyhounds in a Landscape’ by Maud Earl, and famed painter John Emms’ portrait of early Clumber Spaniels.

Guests visiting the home of the UK’s largest organisation dedicated to the health and welfare of dogs will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Kennel Club, and the organisation’s efforts to improve the lives of dogs in the UK. During the tour staff will explain how the Kennel Club is an unparalleled source of information on dog welfare, training and breeding.

Each tour begins at 11am and costs £5 per person. Places are limited so visitors wishing to join a tour must book in advance via phone or email. Refreshments will be served upon arrival and for a small additional charge, guests can enjoy a lunch prepared by the Kennel Club catering team.
