Kennel Club Announces Changes in Stud Book Bands for 2017

The Kennel Club has announced changes in Stud Book bands for 2017 for some breeds, which will apply for all shows from 1st January 2017 to 31st December 2017.

The following breeds have moved Stud Book bands for 2017:

  • Affenpinscher from band A to band B
  • Airedale Terrier from band B to band A
  • Bedlington Terrier from band B to band A
  • Dobermann from band D to band C
  • Dogue de Bordeaux from band A to band B
  • English Setter from band D to band C
  • Japanese Spitz from band A to band B
  • Norfolk Terrier from band B to band A
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier from band D to band E

In addition to the above changes, Cesky Terriers and Spanish Water Dogs will both be listed under band A as they have CCs on offer in 2017 for the first time.

The Stud Book band for each breed of dog is calculated on the average number of entries for that breed over the preceding years.

Helen Reaney, secretary of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Council, said: “We are delighted that our breed has been upgraded from Stud Book band D to band E. This is the result of a lot of hard work on the part of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier clubs, whose various initiatives have worked really well to make shows more attractive for exhibitors and thus increase show entries. Moving Stud Book bands seems like a just reward for all our efforts and we only hope other breeds will feel similarly inspired.

“One of the ways we increased our entries was to allow veterans to enter our shows for free or £1 and we also provided special rosettes.  It is surprising how many people do not enter a show because they have no-one at home to look after their older dog – bringing the dog to the show is a day out for them and they can be in the ring and people new to the breed can possibly see their own pet’s great-grandparents. We would be more than happy to share our ideas with other breeds if they would like to contact us.”

As Stud Book bands are subject to change, it is best to check the Kennel Club website for any changes each January. It should be noted that if a dog gains a Stud Book number, a certificate will automatically be sent to its registered owner within three weeks from the date of the show; however, in busy periods it may take longer.

A Stud Book number qualifies a dog for Crufts for life. The full list of 2017 Stud Book bands can be found on the Kennel Club website.
