Top Retrievers To Head To Suffolk For Prestigious Gundog Championship

The International Gundog League (IGL) Retriever Championship is returning to the Ampton Shooting Estate, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, from 6th - 8th December 2016.

The Championship, held at the estate by kind permission of Peter Rushbrook and Box Tree Game Supplies, is the pinnacle in the working gundog calendar and sees retriever breeds showcasing their working ability and natural retrieving instincts alongside their handlers.

Terry Prentice, President of the International Gundog League Retriever Society, said:  “We are very much looking forward to welcoming a high level of competition at the IGL Retriever Championship again this year.  The competition sees some of the most talented working gundogs carrying out the tasks they were originally bred to do and it’s incredibly impressive to watch them work with their handlers.”

“The event will take place in sugar beet, game cover, white grass and woodland, and the viewing for spectators will be good, so we would encourage those with an interest in working gundogs to come and observe the talent over the course of the three days.

“We are very grateful to our principal sponsors, Skinner’s Pet Foods, together with Isuzu UK and the Kennel Club, for supporting the event and we look forward to a really successful Championship.”

To qualify for the Championship, dogs must have gained an ‘A’ qualification by winning first place in a two-day Open Stake or gain three ‘B’ qualifications by winning first place in a one-day Open Stake or second place in a two-day Open Stake.

The judges will be Phil Allen, Robert Atkinson, Kevin Doughty and Billy Steel Jnr.
