Berkshire's Finest Dogs Help Unite Families This Winter

Not everyone will be with their family over Christmas, but a team of specially trained dogs in Berkshire are getting ready to help reunite families this winter thanks to a £3,500 grant from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.

Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs is a charity set up in 2002 for the purpose of assisting the police to find missing vulnerable people. Specially trained dogs work with a team of volunteer dog handlers to find missing people as a dog's strong sense of smell can identify clues humans can not.

Berkshire SAR Dogs was awarded the grant from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust to help the organisation continue to grow and relocate into new premises. The team has expanded significantly and it now has 33 dogs as well as 43 human members, from an initial membership of just four dogs and 10 people when the charity began.

Berkshire SAR Dogs was recognised by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust as helping dogs live a happy life and helping others to do the same. The Kennel Club Charitable Trust provides funding to a wide variety of charities and organisations that benefit dogs and people, from supporting research into canine diseases, dog welfare organisations and the promotion of support dogs.

Mike Townsend, Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust said: "Every year over 200,000 people go missing in the UK alone. At the Kennel Club Charitable Trust we have the opportunity to support a wide array of charities, and as well as helping dogs through extensive health research programmes, welfare and support charities, we are also able to help humans as a consequence. Support charities such as Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs do amazing work, whilst ensuring their dogs live life to the full and make the most of their capabilities."

Lou Holmes, Chairman of Berkshire SAR Dogs said: "We are extremely grateful to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust for its donation and support for our mission to search, locate and reunite vulnerable missing people with their families and friends."
