Publications, statistics and health results


The Kennel Club produce a range of health reports and publications which keep you up-to-date with the latest news and developments in canine health and welfare. 

A number of annually produced statistics are also published including, amongst other things, breed summary data for DNA tests results and the results of dogs tested under the BVA/KC health schemes.

Kennel Club research

2004 Purebred Dog Health Survey
The Kennel Club/British Small Animal Veterinary Association Scientific Committee joined forces with scientists in the Epidemiology Unit at the Animal Health Trust to carry out a nationwide survey of UK purebred dogs.
2014 Pedigree Breed Health Survey
The results of the 2014 Pedigree Breed Health Survey summarises the results found from nearly 50,000 dogs represented by the completed questionnaires.
Effective population size – population analysis
The Kennel Club’s population analysis reports allow breeders and those involved in canine health to review the unique situation of each breed.
Breed Health Conservation Plans
Breed Health and Conservation Plans will ensure that all health concerns are identified through evidence-based criteria, and that breeders are provided with useful information and resources to support them in making balanced breeding decisions that make health a priority.

Dog Health Group annual report
The Dog Health Group (DHG) Annual Health Report contains the main achievements of the Kennel Club in dog health and details of continuing progress being made towards improving pedigree dog health.
Kennel Club Genetics 5 year report
This report keeps you up-to-date with the progress made by the Kennel Club Genetics Centre, including work on DNA tests and population genetics.
Canine Genetics and Epidemiology Journal
From BoiMed Central, a peer-reviewed, open access, online journal publishing original research and review articles relating to all aspects of canine genetics and epidemiology.
The Kennel Scope
The Kennel Scope is a free quarterly e-newsletter to you informed of the latest news and developments in canine health. Subscribers will also be kept up-to-date with the health information and tools available for breeding.

This report contains breed specific summary information for Official Kennel Club DNA testing schemes.

This report contains breed specific summary information for the BVA/KC CM/SM Scheme.
Breed Specific Information: Hip Dysplasia
This report contains breed specific summary information for the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme.

DNA Screening schemes and results
The Kennel Club, in conjunction with a number of other organisations and the breed clubs concerned, run DNA screening schemes for many breeds. These results provide you with a list of named dogs categorised by breed, DNA test carried out and health test result.
MRD results
There is an Open Register listing named dogs diagnosed as affected for the eye condition multifocal retinal dysplasia (MRD).
Breed registration statistics
The Kennel Club publishes information on the number of dog registrations by breed received each year.
