Sue Hayman MP and her Dogs Trust Rescue Dog

Owner’s Name: Sue Hayman MP

Constituency: Workington

Why have you chosen to enter with a Dogs Trust rescue dog?

I have a chocolate Labrador called Max, but we live in Cumbria, which is too far to bring him. I have chosen to enter with a Dogs Trust rescue dog because Dogs Trust does fantastic work in getting dogs rehomed. I know that it is particularly difficult for greyhounds to be rehomed, and last year I entered with Hugo the greyhound and was delighted that he then found a family to live with. I hope to do the same by entering with a Dogs Trust rescue dog.

What are your favourite characteristics in a dog?

There’s always a friendly face when I come home from a tough week in Westminster. They can sense when you are feeling low – there’s nothing better than a big hug from my dog. My dog also always brings a toy to greet visitors and is a great companion during long fell walks.

What dog welfare issues do you think need tackling?

Puppy smuggling needs to be tackled. Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act needs to be reviewed, as too many healthy dogs are being destroyed under this piece of legislation. The sale and importation of shock collars needs to be outlawed. Regulations surrounding greyhound racing needs to be improved, from birth to retirement and beyond. The impact of fireworks on dogs needs to be considered.

How do you think people can ensure they’re responsible dog owners?

They could take their dogs to training classes. They can work with charities before adoption, to ensure they understand the dog’s needs. Register with a vet, to understand their dog’s health – diet and exercise. To understand the importance of socializing their dog. There are many good books to support new dog owners. In addition, it is really important to keep dogs on a lead around livestock, as much of the livestock worrying occurs because of owners’ lack of understanding.

Why should you and your Dogs Trust rescue dog win Westminster Dog of the Year 2019?

I think it would be wonderful for a Dogs Trust rescue dog to win, both to promote the work of Dogs Trust in rehoming and to increase the dog’s chance of finding a new home. I will do everything I can to put the rescue dog through his paces, whilst giving him lots of love and encouragement.
