What are your favourite characteristics in your dog?

Love of life, loyalty, boundless energy, friendliness.

How does your dog enhance your day to day life?

It is impossible to be gloomy with Welly – everything and everyone is exciting and interesting. I have a husband and four children and he is everyone’s friend. He listens to everything, agrees with everything, sympathises with everyone and never offers an opinion. He congratulates and consoles equally enthusiastically and is a key member of the family.

What dog welfare issues do you think need tackling?

Indiscriminate breeding, particularly in puppy farms both in UK and abroad. As a rural MP I am also aware that the horrific practices of dog fighting and badger baiting still persist and these need to be addressed.

How can you minimise stress to your dog during fireworks displays?

Encourage attendance at organised centralised events rather than back garden displays. Discourage the prolonged sale of fireworks. Ensure he has a secure area that he feels safe in and someone to keep him company.

Why should your dog be crowned Westminster Dog of the Year 2018?

In my eyes he is perfect – the Robert Pattison or Poldark of the canine world. He combines exceptionally good looks with an equally lovely personality.
