The dates for the 2017 Obreedience Heats have been Announced!

There is still time for your club to apply to hold a heat, if this is of interest please fill in the application form.

The purpose of Obreedience is to encourage more breeds to 'have a go' at some of the tests associated with competitive obedience but in a less formal competitive environment.

The Obreedience display had its third successful year at Crufts this March with the Border Collies team emerging as eventual champions. Obreedience is a team event and showcases the talents of each breed through a series of fun exercises and it is perfect for all ages and abilities.

It mixes the best aspects of obedience with the camaraderie found amongst breed enthusiasts, each Obreedience team must comprise of four handlers and four dogs of the same breed who take part in two rounds of competition including a round of heelwork performed together as a group and then four set exercises including a retrieve, a 'send to bed', commanding the dog to stop, and a scent exercise.

This year there is currently 9 qualifying heats with teams collecting points from 1st to 10th in each heat and the top 10 teams with the most points from the heats are invited to compete in the final at Crufts 2018.

Qualifying For Final (to be held at Crufts)

There is no limit on the number of heats in which a team may compete. Points will be awarded as follows: 1st place = 10 points, 2nd place = 9 points etc. down to 10th place = 1 point. After the final heat has taken place, the top ten teams will be invited to compete at Crufts, selection will be subject to the Crufts management's discretion:

1) The team with the highest number of points within each breed will represent that breed in the Final. In the event that two or more teams of the same breed have the same number of points, the team which has achieved the highest placing at the heats will take precedence. A maximum of three breeds will be invited to compete in the final from any one Breed Group subject to the Crufts management's discretion.
2) Where more than three Breed Representative Teams within the shortlist belong to the same Breed Group, only the three highest scoring teams within that Group will be invited to compete at Crufts 2018. The remaining places in the top ten will be offered to the Breed Representative Team(s) with the next highest total points.

Entry fees per team of four will be between £20 and £25 and will be taken either by the individual clubs concerned or by the Kennel Club, please see the individual entry forms for details. Entry closing dates will be 4 weeks prior to the date of the show.

Judges have permission to run the set exercises as they see fit, be this in the original square pattern or in a more suitable format for the ring size. Rosettes and Place Cards for the top 4 teams in each qualifying heat will be provided by the Kennel Club.

The show secretary should record the top ten placed teams and send the results to the Working Dog Activities Team by email at the Kennel Club obedience@thekennelclub.org.uk within 14 days of the show.

2017 Obreedience Heats

Qualifying heats are available for registered societies to host in 2017, the final of which will be held at Crufts 2018. To apply to host a heat simply download the application form below plus advice and guidance for all clubs and the judging criteria or alternatively email the Kennel Club at obedience@thekennelclub.org.uk

These heats are available to Breed, General Canine or Obedience shows and can be held under the show's existing licence as a special class.  There will be a maximum of ten qualifying heats which will be geographically shared around the country if possible.

And with the Obreedience final being held at Crufts, it is anticipated that these heats will be very popular, with the potential to boost show entries and attract spectators so it is in the interests of registered societies to consider applying to host a heat as soon as possible before they are all snapped up!

Click here for a list of judges for host clubs to select from for their heat. If you would like to judge one of the qualifying heats please do register your interest by email to obedience@thekennelclub.org.uk.
