Mark Griffin and Alfie

MSP: Mark Griffin

Region/Constituency: Central Scotland

Dog’s Name: Alfie

Breed: Beagle

Sex: Male

Age: 4

Colour: Tricolour

What are your favourite characteristics in your dog?

Alfie is very playful, gentle with young children, a great running companion and loves to curl up in front of the fire.

What makes your dog such a great animal?

During the last year my wife and I spent a lot of time in hospital with our youngest daughter Rosa who was very premature. Our older daughter Eva was only 18 months old and was away from us for most of the day. Alfie is her best friend and was one of the few constants she could rely on during a very difficult time and they have an amazing bond as a result – even if she still calls him woof woof!

What dog welfare issues do you think need tackling?

The issue of puppy farming needs to be better regulated to ban people who put profit over animal welfare from breeding.

What role should training and socialisation play in a dog’s life and what is your top training tip?

Alfie really benefitted from puppy training classes and the top tip I can give to people who have a beagle is that the stronger smelling the treat you have the better behaved the dog will be!

Why should your dog be crowned Holyrood Dog of the Year 2018?

Alfie should be Holyrood dog of the year because he’s Eva’s best friend and she won’t understand if he doesn’t win
