Alex Cole-Hamilton and Dogs Trust Rescue Dog

MSP Name: Alex Cole-Hamilton

Constituency: Edinburgh Western

Why have you chosen to enter with a Dogs Trust rescue dog?

I had the opportunity to visit the Dog’s Trust on a few occasions and I was impressed by their work supporting and protecting dogs so I wanted to get involved, help promote the cause and hopefully find a deserving dog a new home.

What are your favourite characteristics in a dog?

Loyalty, a happy nature and enthusiasm.

What dog welfare issues do you think need tackling?

As the old phrase goes, a dog is for life not just for Christmas. Anyone looking to get a new pet of any kind has to be confident they can give it the attention and time it deserves. They also need to do their homework to make sure they’ve sourced puppies from safe suppliers so that collectively we can tackle puppy farming.

Are there any changes you’d like to see to legislation governing the use and sale of fireworks?

Fireworks need to be handled carefully and thoughtfully by anyone who buys them. We all know that at certain times of year the noise of fireworks causes animals in homes nearby distress. It’s imperative that people are respectful of their neighbours when it comes to firework displays.

How do you think both dog owners and non-dog owners can reduce the impact that fireworks have on dog welfare?

At big celebratory occasions like New Year or Guy Fawkes night it is probably best to keep dogs inside or on a leash if they’re out and about on a walk. On the flipside people hosting parties with fireworks should give their neighbours with pets a heads up to help them prepare. The main thing is everyone should be considerate.

Why should you and your Dogs Trust rescue dog be crowned Holyrood Dog of the Year 2019?

We deserve a win because of our enthusiasm, energy and commitment to the cause
