CombiBreed health test packages

Testing your dog for all your breed’s recommended DNA tests can be time consuming, expensive and sometimes confusing.

What is CombiBreed?

Our CombiBreed health testing service offers a simple and cost-effective way to DNA test your dog for for that particular breed's priority DNA tests from just one swab. Many of our breed packages include multiple priority DNA tests. By using a single swab to check for a number of different genetic mutations, CombiBreed makes health testing your dog simpler and easier than organising individual tests from several different laboratories.

How does it work?

We will send a DNA collection kit to your address. All you will need to do is swab your dog’s cheek using the two swabs provided and return the swabs in the pre-paid postage. Typically we only need one swab for all testing, however, our sample collection kits contain two swabs to ensure that we collect enough DNA and we have an extra swab if needed. This saves us time if a retest is necessary.

To make sure you get your results as soon as possible, once the testing is completed the results will be emailed to you using the email provided at the time of purchase. You will then receive a hard copy certificate in the post shortly after, and the results will automatically be published on your dog’s profile and our Health Test Results Finder.

How much does it cost?

The cost for each test is listed on the specific package order page relevant to you.

Assured breeders receive a 10% discount on all CombiBreed packages. To redeem this discount, please enter the ABS discount code before checking out.

How do I order?

How long does it take?

We aim to email results back to you within 35 working days from receiving your sample. However, the turnaround time is dependent on variable factors, such as the shipment time of your sample to the test location(s). As some of these factors are out of our control, the mentioned 35 working days is only an estimate.

Sometimes it’s necessary for the laboratory to re-run your sample. This is called a retest and in these cases the turnaround time will inevitably be extended.

Why test your dog?

DNA tests allow you to better understand your dog’s genetics. If you're thinking of breeding from your dog, then knowing more about their DNA can help you take steps to reduce the risk of breeding puppies affected by the most significant inherited conditions for their breed.

Why use CombiBreed?

  • Our CombiBreed health test packages identify whether your dog has any genetic material linked to a range of the most significant inherited conditions specific to your breed*. We work with researchers, vets and experts from breed clubs to determine which health tests are the most important for each breed and we collaborate with our trusted scientific partner, Weatherbys, to bring you a quality and trusted service in a largely unregulated industry
  • We provide you with breeding advice that's simple to use, helping you make informed decisions about the types of mates that would be genetically compatible with your dog for each test result
  • Results are automatically and quickly published on our Health Test Results Finder, demonstrating to potential puppy buyers and other breeders that you prioritise the health of the puppies you breed

*Some health test packages may include tests that may not be a priority in the breed, but we are collecting data for research purposes to monitor conditions that are "under surveillance". Results will be given to you, but may not be published on our Health Test Results Finder.

CombiBreed prcd-PRA testing

As part of our CombiBreed health testing service, we also offer a single prcd-PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) DNA test for a number of breeds. Prcd-PRA is one of the most widespread forms of PRA, with the recessive gene mutation known to occur in more than 20 breeds. The mutation that was shown to cause this blinding disease was initially identified in several different breeds, however it has subsequently been found in many other breeds with some research suggesting its association with prcd-PRA.
A single prcd-PRA DNA test can be purchased for the following breeds.
  • American Cocker Spaniel
  • Australian Cattle Dog
  • Australian Shepherd
  • Chesapeake Bay Retriever
  • Chinese Crested
  • English Cocker Spaniel
  • Entlebucher Mountain Dog
  • Finnish Lapphund
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Miniature and Toy Poodle
  • Norwegian Elkhound
  • Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
  • Portuguese Water Dog
  • Spanish Water Dog
  • Giant Schnauzer

Questions and answers

How do I collect the DNA from my dog?

To take a sample of DNA from your dog, we will send you a small brush, known as a mouth/buccal swab, which you can use to gently rub the inside of your dog’s cheek, causing loose cheek cells to stick to the bristles. This is completely painless and non-invasive. The swab is then returned to the laboratory, where the cheek cells are broken open and the DNA is analysed.

Do assured breeders get a discount?

Yes, assured breeders receive a 10% discount. To redeem this discount, please enter the assured breeders discount code before checking out.

Can I order a CombiBreed package if my dog is not registered with The Kennel Club?

Yes absolutely, we just won’t be able to record the results on our website. When ordering please enter your dog’s pet name when prompted for The Kennel Club registered name and enter N/A when prompted for The Kennel Club registered number.

How old does my dog have to be?

There is no minimum age for DNA testing and they can be tested at any time from birth. When testing young puppies, we advise to avoid contact with the dam for an hour prior to collecting the swab sample to avoid cross-contamination.
