The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme is the UK's largest dog training programme introduced to assist owners in training their dogs to be obedient in everyday situations. Since its inception in 1992, the Scheme has helped to educate almost a quarter of a million dog owners. Its simple but effective dog training techniques encompass all the skills necessary for a happy and rewarding partnership with your dog. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, types, breeds, ages and abilities. All are capable of learning, and despite previous notions, you can teach an old dog new tricks, but you do need to consider the type of dog that you own and the task that you are trying to teach it.

That's why the Scheme is of great benefit as it is an exciting way of interacting with your dog and learning life skills together.

There are four levels of the Scheme:

  • Puppy Foundation
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold

Each one develops an owner's understanding, while building a dog's confidence and levels of obedience. There are lots of unanswered questions that new owners are faced with and often need guidance on to approach certain situations. Dog owners also have an obligation to their community and participants will be guided on the ethical and moral responsibilities that are associated with dog ownership.

All dogs are eligible to take part, whether they are young or old, pedigree or crossbreed. Over 1800 dog training schools throughout the UK offer Scheme training courses and you can search for these by county here.

Finally remember that dog training can be lots of fun and very rewarding. After all, a trained dog is a happy dog.
