USD Health Programme

USD Test Health Programme

The USD Test Health Programme tests for the SLC2A9 gene associated with Hyperuricosuria (HUU)/Urate Stone Disorder (USD).

Hyperuricosuria (HUU) is an inherited condition which can affect Dalmatians. The condition is characterized by elevated levels of uric acid in the urine. This disease predisposes dogs to form stones in their bladders or sometimes kidneys.

How it is inherited

Hyperuricosuria is inherited as a simple autosomal recessive trait. Dogs with two copies of the SLC2A9 gene (one inherited from their mother and one inherited from their father) are predisposed to higher levels of uric acid in their urine. These increased levels can lead to crystals and stone structures forming in the urinary tract, which may cause infections, blood in the urine and blockage of the urethra (the tube that takes urine out of the body from the bladder).

This health programme is particularly relevant to Dalmatian outcrosses and subsequent generations of progeny derived from such outcrosses.

Test Results

The result of this test will either be Clear, Carrier or Affected.

Requirements for publishing results

• All participating dogs will need to be KC registered and microchipped before a sample is taken

• Sample (buccal swab, blood, or other) is taken by a veterinary surgeon/nurse to confirm the ID of the dog

• Results must be submitted from an approved laboratory

• Owners are encouraged to submit copies of the certificates themselves, directly to the Kennel Club, if the approved laboratory does not automatically do so
