Clinical signs

Apart from the shortened stature, SD2 affected dogs do not show any further clinical signs. This contrasts with pituitary dwarfism, which can cause malformed genitals or neuronal diseases.

Details about the disease

SD2, also known as dwarfism, is a genetic condition that causes long bones to stop growing before being fully developed. This particular type of dwarfism results in shortened front limbs and a raising dorsal line, but does not alter the torso length and depth as with other forms of dwarfism (pituitary dwarfism).

How it is inherited

The disease is described as an autosomal recessive condition. This means that a dog must inherit two copies of an abnormal gene (one from its mother and one from its father) before its health is affected. A dog that inherits only one copy of the abnormal gene (from its mother or its father) will have no signs of the disease, but will be a carrier and may pass the gene on to any offspring.
