Description

Illustration of Ibizan Hound

The elegant outline of the Ibizan with its large ears can be seen in the drawings on Ancient Egyptian tombs. He is the rabbit hunter of Ibiza (Podenco Ibicenco) and has been seen in Ibiza and the neighbouring Island of Formentera for thousands of years. The small island population meant a relatively small gene pool which was kept pure and this resulted in consistency in type. There are two types of coat, the smooth and rough. The breed is noted for its relatively straight forehand angulation and light hovering gait.

The Hound Breed Group

Breeds originally used for hunting either by scent or by sight. The scent hounds include the Beagle and Bloodhound and the sight hounds such breeds as the Whippet and Greyhound. Many of them enjoy a significant amount of exercise and can be described as dignified, aloof but trustworthy companions.
