Norwegian Elkhound

Illustration of Norwegian Elkhound

In Norway, Stone Age skeletons of dogs very similar to the modern Elkhound have been found which suggest that the breed is ancient and unchanged. Spitz like with a distinctive grey coat, the Elkhound is athletic and strong.

The breed has long been the favoured hunting dog in Norway, used by hunters to track Elk, when his resonant bark comes into good use.

The Hound Breed Group

Breeds originally used for hunting either by scent or by sight. The scent hounds include the Beagle and Bloodhound and the sight hounds such breeds as the Whippet and Greyhound. Many of them enjoy a significant amount of exercise and can be described as dignified, aloof but trustworthy companions.
