English Setter From Ireland Wins Pointer And Setter Champion Stake

01 September 2016    12:00

A six-year-old English Setter from Ireland has won the Pointer and Setter Champion Stake 2016 at the Byrecleugh Estate in Lauder in the Scottish Borders.

FT Ch Ballyellen Cara, owned by Bill Connolly from Goresbridge, County Kilkenny was handled at the stake by Gerry Devine and impressed the judges with her working ability in quartering and hunting.

The Pointer and Setter Champion Stake, sponsored by Connolly’s Red Mills, is organised by the Scottish Field Trials Association on behalf of the Kennel Club, and is held at the Byrecleugh Estate by gracious permission of the Duke of Roxburghe.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “Our congratulations go to Ballyellen Cara and both Bill Connolly and Gerry Devine.  They should be tremendously proud of their performance at the Pointer and Setter Champion Stake.  The victory is even more impressive given that, in 2015, the English Setter was added to the Kennel Club’s list of vulnerable native British breeds, which includes those native dog breeds with fewer than 300 puppy registrations annually.  This goes to show that whilst English Setters may not be the most well-known or popular breed, they are exceptionally talented working dogs.”

The results for the day were as follows:

  • 1st place - FT Ch Ballyellen Cara, owned by Bill Connolly and handled by Gerry Devine
  • 2nd place - Frosted Elfin at Fleetstalk, owned and handled by Steve Lounds
  • 3rd place - Hunshigo Donard, owned and handled by Mark Adams
  • 4th place - Bownard Cherry Cherry, owned and handled by Donna Clark
  • Diplomas of merit - Upperwood Ash Alert, owned and handled by David Halls; FT Ch Upperwood Hera, owned and handled by Dom Goutorbes; Upperwood Clover, owned and handled by Dom Goutorbes.

The judges at the stake were Meryl Asbury, Michael Houston and Shaun McCormack.
