Delighted owner Babs Sharp and her stunning pet dog Jazz were ready to break out the champagne at Crufts after winning the Kennel Club's Good Citizen Dog Scheme Special Pre Beginner Obedience Stakes Competition Final on Saturday 7th March. Babs and Jazz won their way through to the final and beat 19 other dogs to be crowned the winner of the 2015 Stakes Competition. The Judge for the final was Michael McCartney.

Jazz, Kennel Club name 'Jazzed up', a 3 year old Malinois and her owner Babs Sharp have only been training for less than 2 years and have achieved a huge amount in that time. As well as qualifying for the Final, they have also gone on to compete in competitive obedience winning Beginners and Novice along the way.

All the finalists had worked hard to gain their places, having beaten over 1,300 entrants in fierce competition at 28 heats held across the country, with heat winners then competing against each other to win a top five place at one  four semi-finals held in Edinburgh and London.

Jazz's owner Babs Sharp said "I am overwhelmed to win the final of the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Special Pre Beginner Stakes. Jazz was a stray dog running the streets of London and when she was eventually picked up, was put on 7 day destruction order. This was when I first got to know about her and just had to have her. I never realised what a special relationship this would be. Thanks to the help from Cheltenham & District DTC, we have worked very hard which has enabled us to achieve things we never even dreamed of."

This Special Pre-Beginner Stakes were created in 2005, to encourage prospective exhibitors who had passed their GCDS Bronze Award to take part in obedience competition. The exercises included in the test are a combination of the current GCDS exercises and the Pre-Beginner Obedience test. Building on the basic training skills learnt through the Good Citizen Dog Scheme, these new stakes help to bridge the gap between basic training and entering a competition.

Maurice Cooke, GCDS Working Party Chairman, said "This is the tenth time the final has been held at Crufts and it is always a tight competition. Babs and Jazz are not only good citizens but have now taken that initial step into competition obedience, and we wish them luck as they continue to progress."
