02 July 2015    09:00

Hundreds of inspiring stories about the relationship between dogs and people been received by the Kennel Club for its annual Eukanuba Friends for Life competition, being held at the country's most prestigious dog event, Crufts.

This is the final week for people to send nominations to the Kennel Club if they feel that their life, or the life of somebody that they know, has been changed dramatically by their dog, whether a companion dog, service dog, assistance dog or an all-round dog hero. The Kennel Club also wants to hear about people who have dramatically turned around the life of man's best friend.

A panel of judges will select five finalists who will go forward to the final at Crufts on 8thMarch 2015, where the overall winner, selected by public vote, will be announced before the grand finale of the Crufts Best in Show award.

Last year the competition was won by Molly whose companionship transformed the life of her owner Lucy Watts, who suffered with a life-limiting rare genetic condition, by giving her confidence and helping to take the focus of other people away from her wheelchair and illness.

Nilhan Onal, Eukanuba Marketing Leader, said: "We are pleased to be working in partnership with the Kennel Club to recognise the special relationship between man and dog, on the world's most famous dog stage, Crufts.

"Eukanuba Friends for Life celebrates the unique and special relationship between dogs and people and the way that lives are transformed, enriched and even saved as a result of the relationship."

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club secretary, said: "We have already received so many inspiring stories about dogs who have completely transformed their owners' lives through their bravery, support or companionship and about people who have dramatically turned around the life of man's best friend. We encourage anybody with a special and inspiring relationship with a dog or a tale of bravery to tell, to come forward for a chance to be recognised in this competition. People can view the nominations so far and make a nomination themselves on the Crufts website.

"Friends for Life is just one aspect of Crufts that celebrates the diverse role that dogs play in society and the way that they enrich our lives."
