Winners of the 2014 Cocker Spaniel Championship

The 82ndKennel Club Cocker Spaniel Championship, kindly sponsored by Eukanuba, took place from 15th- 17thJanuary 2014 at the beautiful Queensberry Estate, Dumfries and Galloway, by gracious permission of the Duke of Buccleuch.

This year's championship had the highest number of entries in the event's history with a total of 40 entrants, demonstrating the increasing popularity of the working Cocker Spaniel. The dogs were all of a very high standard and, despite the dreary weather and difficult ground, the dogs excelled, with 26 going through to the second day.

Sadly, the trial had to be suspended on the second day when a spectator was taken ill and subsequently died of natural causes, despite the best efforts of nurses and the Scottish Air and land ambulance team. The Kennel Club would like to express its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased.

After discussions involving His Grace, the Duke of Buccleuch, Headkeeper, Rab Clark, the Championship judges and senior Kennel Club officials, it was decided to continue with the event on Friday 17thJanuary. The Kennel Club extends its gratitude to the Duke of Buccleuch and his estate staff that, despite extensive shooting commitments of their own, a special effort was made to allow for the conclusion of the Championship.

The third day began with all but one of the competitors able to continue with the competition. The ground was excellent and the day was only occasionally interrupted with a shower. The Stake concluded in the afternoon with Mr N Partiss' bitch, FTCh Brook Furlong of Tiptopjack, handled by Mr I Openshaw, securing victory. During the presentation ceremony over £140 was raised to be donated to the Scottish Air Ambulance Service.

The judges - Mr S Bolton, Mr D Rayner, Mr A Cunningham and Mr S Russell -selected the following winners:
