Thousands Of Dogs Join Edinburgh Festival Fever This Weekend

20 August 2013    12:00

With Edinburgh's festival season in full swing, the Scottish Kennel Club is hosting its own 'four-legged festival' in the city this weekend. The Scottish Kennel Club Championship Dog Show is being held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August at the Royal Highland Showground, Ingliston.

More than 4,400 dogs from over 125 breeds will descend on the city for the annual show, to compete for the ultimate 'Best in Show' prize, and for the chance to qualify for the world's greatest dog show, Crufts.

Visitors will have the chance to see their favourite breeds in action, and talk to experts to find out more about caring for healthy, happy dogs.  For those thinking about getting a dog, the show is the perfect opportunity to interact with man's best friend and find out more about dog showing and the many other activities dog owners can get involved in with their pets.

The show is one of 37 Group and General Championship Dog Shows licensed by the Kennel Club throughout the year, which enable dogs to qualify for next year's Crufts.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: "The Scottish Kennel Club show is the perfect opportunity for dog lovers of all ages to spend some time with man's best friend.  There is always a lot to do at the show, and visitors will be able to see all the firm favourites, such as the Labradors, Pugs, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, as well as some of the rarer breeds like the iconic Scottish breed, the Skye Terrier, made famous by Edinburgh's own Greyfriars Bobby.

"The show is always very popular and brilliant fun for the whole family and we'd recommend you come along and see exactly what is involved in a Championship dog show.  You'll also be able to get in a little bit of retail therapy at some of the fantastic trade stands that are on offer, selling a great selection of doggy wares.

"Edinburgh is alive with festival-goers from all over the world at the moment, and for those who love dogs, the show would make the perfect addition to their experience of the city."

There is a £5 car parking fee at the show. 'Spectator dogs' are welcome for a £5 fee payable at the gate.
