The Kennel Club is opposed to the sale and consumption of dog
meat. Dogs and cats should not be slaughtered for food as they are
considered to be inherently different in their temperament and
physiology to domestic livestock species.
The trade has been associated with a large number of animal
welfare violations, which include neglect towards their physical
and mental needs, living and transported in crowded conditions
without sufficient water or food. In addition, slaughtering methods
are brutal with no regard to the welfare of the animal.
The Kennel Club continues to lobby the UK Government, raising
awareness of the issue with the European Commission and Parliament
and work with other welfare organisations to apply pressure on
foreign countries to end their dog and cat meat trade or to better
enforce their bans.
