Dear X MSP,

I am writing to urge you to write to the Rural Affairs and Environment Minster, Richard Lochhead MSP, calling on him to completely ban the sale and use of electric shock collars in Scotland.

Electric shock collars worn around the neck of a dog have essentially one function, to deliver a painful shock to the animal.  This trains a dog to respond out of fear of further punishment- having received a shock when it does not perform what is asked of it, rather than through a natural willingness to obey.

Shock collars are readily available to purchase by mail order, via retail outlets and on the Internet.  There are no restrictions on who can buy them and they are often sold to unscrupulous people or those with little or no experience in training.  Anyone can place an electric training device on a dog and administer 'correctional' treatment.  I do not deem this to be acceptable and cannot comprehend why anyone has any justification for using these barbaric and inhumane devices.  Pain and fear are not humane methods by which to educate or train any creature, especially since there are other, positive, training tools which are widely available and cause no pain or abuse to the animal.

The Kennel Club has obtained scientific evidence which proves that the use of these products is ' not only unpleasant but also painful and frightening'.  This research is peer reviewed which dates back decades and proves that using electric stimulus on animals has a damaging long-term effect.  I am pleased that the Scottish Government has issued a consultation seeking views on the issue which closes on the 30th of November.

As my representative I am asking you to please write to the Minister signalling your support for any ban, encourage you to respond to the consultation and sign a motion tabled by Kenneth Gibson MSP, Motion S3M-428: Electric Training Devices.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding this issue.
