The Young Kennel Club Team GB first try out day was held on 4th December at Nottingham Trent University. For the first time the try out day was being held alongside the Team GB Agility Squad, providing a lot of atmosphere for all of the competitors. There were 53 Young Kennel Club members with 90 dogs across the 3 heights vying for a place on the 2nd Squad Day.
New for 2017, each squad member was provided with a t-shirt for them to wear whilst trying out for the team. This was a small memento from the Young Kennel Club Team GB sponsors.
All of the Young Kennel Club Team GB Management Team, consisting of Mark Laker, Paul Moore, Ann Roberts, Neil Ellis and Alex Paisey, were in attendance assessing the competitors both in the ring and out of the ring, monitoring their preparation and attitudes in particular.
Check in for the day started at 8:15am for a 9am start, meaning there was a long day of agility ahead. The squad was very lucky with the absentee rate being very low, great for the competition. The members ran 3 courses each (Jumping, Agility and a final Jumping round) which were judged by Paul Moore and Neil Ellis. All competitors coped incredibly well under the pressure and the format, with each member putting in a fantastic performance despite the competition being tough and conditions that competitors/dogs may not have been used to before.
To break up the day, and provide rest for the dogs, there was a session from a well-known former Olympic coach, Alan Richardson. The session taught them new and exciting sprinting techniques to help their own development.
After Squad Day 1, the Coaching Team invited back 57 dogs to compete at Squad Day 2 which will be held at Nottingham Trent University (Brackenhurst Campus) on Saturday 25th February 2017. We would like to thank all the Agility Team GB sponsors for their support.
