The Kennel Club Healthcare Plan - providing peace of mind at a difficult time
'Another special benefit and reason to insure your dog with the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan'
It is widely acknowledged that pets positively benefit the well-being of elderly owners – on hand 24 hours a day, every day, comforting, loving and protecting their owners and providing intense loyalty. It is therefore a sad fact that many elderly and infirm dog owners understandably worry about the fate of their pets and the situation can cause them great anxiety should they die, fall ill, or have to move to residential accommodation.
To address this important welfare issue for both the owner and the much loved pet, the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan – the leading light in the pet insurance market – and the Cinnamon Trust – the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets - have teamed up to provide customers with the certainty that their companion will be loved and cared for once they either pass away or become unable to look after them.
This new benefit to the Healthcare Plan will provide policyholders with the peace of mind that their pet will be properly cared for throughout their lifetime and will help ease the burden and lessen the heartache when important decisions need to be made.
This benefit will be added to the already comprehensive Kennel Club Healthcare Plan and will be launched on the 1st November, including:
- A national network of over 10,000 community service volunteers to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem - for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner.
- A national fostering service for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital - volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited.
- Long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets.
- When staying at home is no longer an option, the Pet Friendly Care Homes Register lists residential/nursing homes happy to accept residents with pets.
- When a pet is in the Trust’s care, either short term or long term, because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters.
- Anyone of any age can make arrangements for pets that may outlive them to come into the Trust’s care.
Rosemary Smart, Chief Executive of the Kennel Club said: “I think we’ve all been directly or indirectly involved in cases of family loss, when a much loved pet was left and their care in the future had to be planned. This causes additional worry and stress at an extremely sad time. For anyone in this position, the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan and Cinnamon Trust will make sure that the appropriate arrangements are made to ensure that the owner’s wishes are carried out, causing the minimal amount of worry to the owner or the family left behind. This partnership with the Cinnamon Trust reinforces and reiterates the KC's prime objective of 'making a difference for dogs' and in this case for their owners too.”
Said Averil Jarvis MBE, Founder and Chief Executive of the Cinnamon Trust, “The Cinnamon Trust offers peace of mind and practical help for people and love, care and safety for pets. A network of 10,000 volunteers “hold hands” with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. We keep them together - for example, we’ll walk a dog every day for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care and we’ll fetch the cat food. We are very happy to enter into this arrangement with the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan as the pleasures, joys and benefits of pet ownership are seriously compromised by anxieties over the future and our experience enables us to ensure that, no matter how old bereaved pets are, they are happy, loved and safe in a home environment.
So don’t delay – contact the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan to discuss your arrangements today!

Background Information on The Cinnamon Trust
Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems, and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering. The Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis whose determination and dedication has ensured that the manifest need is fully addressed.
The trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between elderly owners and their pets. To this end it works in partnership with owners to overcome any difficulties that might arise. A national network of over 8,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem - for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner. A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited.
Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance, if possible, so owners have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request.
The Cinnamon Trust was founded for elderly people and their pets, but its services are also offered to terminally ill pet owners, for they, sadly, and often prematurely, are faced with the same worries and fears as elderly pet owners. Anyone of any age can make arrangements for pets that may outlive them to come into the Trust’s care.
