Breed Clubs

There are 210 breeds of pedigree dog recognised by the Kennel Club and almost every one of these breeds has at least one Kennel Club registered breed club. More unusual breeds, such as the Alaskan Malamute, have only one club, but a really popular breed, like the Cocker Spaniel, boasts 24 clubs distributed across the entire country.

The people who set up and belong to these clubs are breed enthusiasts; they may have been involved with a particular breed all their lives, or may be keen to form a breed club for a newly recognised breed. As these clubs are for breed enthusiasts, they will be involved with all sorts of activities which promote the well-being and understanding of the particular breed. Seminars and classes may be organised to discuss nutrition, grooming and showing techniques, the history of the breed, or perhaps to address hereditary problems in the breed. Judging seminars may be organised to give would-be judges a greater insight into the breed and lists of judges will be compiled. Clubs also produce magazines and other publications and dog shows may be scheduled.

All Breed Clubs are required to adopt the Kennel Club’s Code of Ethics which Breed Club Secretaries can download in Word format here

The Kennel Club can help you with details of your nearest breed club if you telephone 0844  463 3980.  Alternatively you can visit the Breed Standards section of the website, select the breed you are interested in and the Breed Clubs for your breed will be listed at the bottom of the page, with the Club Secretary’s name and contact details.  There will also be a link to the Club’s website if they have one.
