Register your litter
The Kennel Club is dedicated to canine wellbeing and registers over 250,000 pedigree dogs every year. This knowledge helps to maintain the integrity and health of pedigree breeds. There are 209 breeds of dog eligible for Kennel Club registration, which are categorised in seven groups: hounds, gundogs, terriers, utility, working, pastoral and toys.
Registration with the Kennel Club gives new owners access to an unparalleled source of information, experience, advice on dog welfare, health, training and breeding. It also means that their dogs can take part in many shows and events throughout the country.
Prospective owners want to buy Kennel Club registered puppies because they know they have been bred with care and can be confident that the dog they choose will display the proper characteristics of the breed in both looks and temperament. We recommend that you register your litter as soon as possible to make sure that the relevant documents are available to new owners at the time of sale.
The Kennel Club breed register is only available to those puppies where the sire and dam are in, or have been transferred to the registered ownership of the owner of the dog. And as long as you have mated him or her with a dog of the same breed which is also Kennel Club registered.
Ways to register your litter
There are two ways that breeders can now register their litters.
Registering your litter by completing the Application for Litter Registration (Form 1)
Please remember to complete all sections of form and return it to the Kennel Club. Application processing may take up to 14 days and so we kindly urge breeders to complete the application as early as possible to ensure the relevant registration documents are available for the puppies new owners at the time of sale.
Please note: failure to complete the application form and/or include the correct payment, will delay the registration process. Please refer to the guide notes and checklist which can be found on the application form to help you.
Once registered, you will receive individual registration papers (Breeder Registration Certificate pictured right) for each puppy which you will need to sign and pass to the new owner to enable them to transfer ownership.

Six weeks free insurance of new puppy owners
Those first few weeks in its new home are crucial for a puppy’s welfare. That’s why the Kennel Club is offering six weeks free insurance cover with the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan to new owners from the date of purchase. All you need to do is point out to the new owner the advantages of activating the insurance and completing and returning the transfer of ownership form to the Kennel Club just as you give advice on training, feeding, exercising and so on. You could then be refunded the cost of the puppy's registration if the new owner does take out the Kennel Club Healthcare Plan.
Breed Records Supplement
The Kennel Club Breed Records Supplement (to the Stud Book) is a quarterly publication where all registration related applications are shown. Your puppies are automatically entered onto it when you register each one.
This includes litters, transfer or ownership, change of name, exported and imported dogs, health results and many other Kennel Club related transactions. These are listed per breed and published per breed group. All applications entered on our database within each quarter make up each edition.
The Supplement is available as a single copy or as a yearly subscription from the publications section within our Online Shop or from our Publications Department on 020 7518 1016. NOTE: The last three characters in a dog's registration number indicate in which issue the relevant details are published and when purchasing this publication at the time of an application, it will be dispatched at a later date and not with your registration document.
