Training Clubs
If you have taken part in the Good Citizen Dog Scheme you may well have gone to classes at your local dog training club and it can also help you and your dog progress beyond basic obedience. All sorts of things will be taught from walking to heel, sitting and staying on command or more specialist training for competition such as scent, retrieve, send-away and down-stay exercises.

It is well worth joining your local training club as there is usually an active social life providing all sorts of competitions and information available to all. You will find out all manner of useful information about dogs - where and when shows and competitions are going to be held, what is involved with the different types of competition and, where to go locally for such things as veterinary services, or, the best grooming parlour.

Ringcraft Clubs
If you know that you are going to want to develop your dog into a ‘show’ dog, there are many clubs specialising in ‘Ringcraft'.

Ringcraft classes teach you how to prepare and present your dog so that it looks its best for the judge in the show ring. A great deal of time and effort goes into presenting a dog for exhibition at a show and even getting your dog to perform in the ring is a lot harder than it looks. The judge will not be impressed by a dog that only wants to slouch in the corner, or amble ungracefully around the ring. It is very important that you learn how to present your dog in the show ring to show off all his finer points.

General Canine Societies
As well as societies dedicated to specific breeds there are hundreds of clubs catering for dog lovers on a regional basis.

General Canine Societies are geared towards more general interests and to scheduling shows, some also run ringcraft classes.

The larger General Canine Societies run the prestigious All Breed Championship shows which attract thousands of competitors every year. As well as being top competitions with many prizes and awards on offer, these shows are major exhibitions as well, with trade stands selling all sorts of dog paraphernalia, visitors attending from far and wide, and hundreds of spectators.

Specialist Societies
There are hundreds of clubs set up specifically to cater for the sports of Obedience, Agility and Flyball, Working Trials, Heelwork to Music and Field Trials and Working Gundogs.

You and your dog may well have become involved in the world of canine competition by going along to your local training club and these tend also to be the clubs dedicated, at a higher level, to Obedience, Working Trials and Agility.
