Email and SMS alerts take the lead in pet reunification
An email sent to authorities in a 30 mile radius notifying them of a lost pet in the area, and the ability to use SMS to report a pet missing, were the main reasons why hundreds of people upgraded to Petlog Premium during the recent National Microchipping Month.
The alerts are sent out as an added benefit for pet owners who upgrade to Petlog Premium, and flag up missing pets in the local area to registered users such as vets and dog wardens. This is further complimented by the Lost Pet Alert: a mobile phone app which allows Petlog Premium users of the free ‘my dog uk’ app simply to press a button on their mobile phone to alert Petlog that their pet has gone missing. This activates an email to registered authorised users within a 30 mile radius of the GPS location of the phone.
Black and white cat, Squishy, is the first pet to be reunited following her owner’s use of the Lost Pet Alert. It was a stressful wait for owner Tammy Fifield, but the microchip and the alert paid off as Squishy is now back at home with her relieved owner in Stafford.
Squishy went missing on the 27th July and as soon as Tammy Fifield realised, she sent an alert through to Petlog using the Lost Pet Alert application. Petlog called Tammy to confirm that Squishy had gone missing and were also told that Squishy suffered from chest problems and this was added to her record. On the 16th August Squishy was taken to a local vet after she was found in a shed, the vet identified her from her microchip, found she belonged to Tammy and that she had been registered as missing for a number of weeks. Tammy explains: “I got the call from the vets and I was in tears, I told my daughters, Amanda and Kim that Squishy had been found, I was excited and also very relieved that she had been found. She was injured so needed a few visits to the vet, but has now been given the all clear. She is back to her normal self, which is the most laid back feline I've ever known! She also likes to stand guard over us first thing in the morning.”
Petlog asked over 600 people who upgraded to Petlog Premium through June what their motivations were for upgrading and were pleased to see that so many people were encouraged by the added extras such as the email and SMS alerts. The research also found that 47% of people had out of date contact details and so chose to upgrade to Petlog Premium and can now update for free throughout the life of their pet.
Petlog Executive, Celia Walsom said: “Petlog Premium is available to all Petlog customers for a one off cost of £10 and we decided to introduce Petlog Premium to make it easier for people to manage their accounts, and give them a number of added benefits. Owners of pets on Petlog Premium can update their contact details as often as they like for no extra cost and also add holiday information and emergency contacts but we were delighted to see so many people interested in the SMS and email alerts as this is something we think will really help reunite lost owners and pets quickly.”
Petlog is the UK’s largest lost and found pet database with over 6.5m pets registered. Petlog Premium offers a comprehensive package for a small one off cost and provides owners with the peace of mind that if their pet goes missing they have the best possible chance of being reunited.
