Young Kennel Club National Training Camp

For over 20 years, savvy parents have been taking their children and dogs to a unique summer camp, where a team of young trainers help children learn to train their dogs.

The Young Kennel Club (YKC) runs the National Training Camp which takes place every summer at Brooksby College in Melton Mowbray, and families come from around the country to attend. This year the camp will take place from 28th July - 3rd of August.

Vanessa McAlpine, Events and Education Executive for the Kennel Club explains: “We see a great mix of children aged 8 to 15 at camp. Many children return year after year, but we always see a lot of people coming for their first experience and having a wonderful time.

“The children love spending time with their dogs and often find they have a stronger relationship with their dog after camp. They can take part in a variety of activities together including training and obedience but also sports such as agility and flyball.”

Senior YKC members act as team leaders at Camp, and they then take over in the evenings with a packed social programme. There are regular fun activities which test stamina, brains and push the fun levels, such as games night, talent night and a huge last night party.

Andrea McHugh, from Grantham, Lincolnshire said: “This will be the third time that Maddie, my 12-year-old daughter and I have been to camp with our dogs, and we wouldn't miss it for the world! It’s a fantastic experience for kids, parents and dogs. There’s not a sniff of a computer or an X-box all week, but with so many brilliant activities each day and night all the kids are enjoying themselves too much to notice and at the end they come away having made new friends and with lots of new skills. This is definitely one of the best value, fun weeks of the year!”

Parents are asked to come along and have the opportunity to help out, watch or simply relax with other parents while the children are off learning new skills and activities with their dogs and making new friends.
