Changes to Kennel Club Heelwork to Music Regulations for 2012

A number of changes to the Heelwork to Music Regulations have been approved to come into force from 1st January 2012.

The principal change is a rewriting of the descriptions against the different score levels in the judges’ scoring structure, intended to make the scores more informative, especially for less experienced competitors. In addition, the wording in the Regulations specifying content to be included in the specimen schedule has been simplified, and there is clarification that shows should use the Incident Book published by the Kennel Club to submit reports of any incidents arising.

The details of the new wording explaining the scoring structure are given below under ‘Regulation Amendments’. The revision is intended to make the score structure more easily understood by competitors, and to act as an indication of suitable marking in order to facilitate consistency of scoring between judges. In particular it is hoped that the revised wording will help competitors understand that judges are marking the performance on the day, rather than the innate or potential ability of the competitor.

The simplification of the regulation relating to specimen schedules does not involve any change to the specimen schedules themselves, which will continue to be published by the Kennel Club each autumn via the Kennel Club website. Shows should continue to follow the wording and layout of the specimen schedule and entry form when preparing schedules for their own shows, and should check annually for any amendments to the previous edition of the specimen. There will be a minor addition to Regulation L13 (Management) to confirm that show societies may reserve the right to refuse entries.

The third amendment is intended only to require that from January, show managements should make use of the Kennel Club’s Incident Report Book when reporting incidents to the Kennel Club. (Copies of the book are available free of charge to competition managers and societies, who may request copies by contacting the Working Dog Activities Team at the Kennel Club).

Notes to Editors
The Kennel Club is the largest organisation in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training. Its objective is to ensure that dogs live healthy, happy lives with responsible owners.

It runs the country’s largest registration database for both pedigree and crossbreed dogs and the Petlog database, which is the UK’s largest reunification service for microchipped animals. The Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme is the only scheme in the UK that monitors and sets standards for breeders, in order to protect the welfare of puppies and breeding bitches. It also runs the UK’s largest dog training programme, the Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme and licenses shows and clubs across a wide range of activities, which help dog owners to bond and enjoy life with their dogs. The Kennel Club runs the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts, and the Discover Dogs event at Earls Court, London, which is a fun family day out that educates people about how to buy responsibly and care for their dog.

The Kennel Club invests the money that it makes from registrations and its Petlog identification database into its dog training and education programmes, welfare campaigns and the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, which supports dog welfare charities and research into dog diseases. The Kennel Club jointly runs health screening schemes with the British Veterinary Association and, through the Charitable Trust, funds the Kennel Club Genetics Centre at the Animal Health Trust, which is at the forefront of pioneering research into dog health.
