Rosemary Conley's Top Tips
Exercise your way to a fitter new you with Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs
Wouldn’t it be great if there was one thing we could do to lower our cholesterol and blood pressure, halve our risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes and protect us against cancers and conditions like arthritis, depression and asthma? Well, there is. It’s exercise!
Aerobic exercise is any activity which makes us breathe more deeply, such as brisk walking. It burns fat from our body’s fat stores to use as fuel. It also increases our metabolic rate, not just while we are exercising, but for several hours afterwards. Just 15 minutes of brisk walking will burn off 100 calories.
Dog owners are in the lucky position where they have a reason to get out of the house and to exercise. There’s nothing like your dog to motivate you to get out in the fresh air and enjoy a walk together. It can be really rewarding for both of you and the health benefits of walking just one mile a day (20 mins) are phenomenal.
It is well known that a gym buddy will help you to get out of the armchair when your own motivation is lacking but many so called gym buddies will often lack motivation themselves. Your dog will never say no, so dog owners should take advantage of their own personal trainer and get fit with them alongside.
Owning a dog is a brilliant way to lose weight, get fitter and improve the health of all the family, as a dog provides a real reason to go for regular walks.
And in order to ensure that dog owners have a well rounded exercise and healthy eating plan Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs is offering free membership to those who join the Get Fit With Fido Challenge.
Why Exercise?
Exercise will not only make you fitter and healthier, it will also help you burn extra calories so you lose weight faster and maximise your inch loss. And, once you’ve lost your excess weight and inches, regular exercise will help you to stay slim in the long term.
We often complain we don’t have time for physical activity and yet in Britain we watch an average of 27 hours a week of television – that’s almost four hours a day! But when we hear the Department of Health’s recommendations that we should take 30 minutes of exercise five times a week, it just seems too much to fit in.
The 5-a-week exercise target is all about moving more and elevating our heart rate for a while on a regular basis so our heart becomes stronger and fitter. Alongside the benefits to our heart, lungs, muscles, joints, bones and organs and our mind, the health gains from the increased blood supply circulating around our body are huge. The key to success is doing a form of exercise, such as walking, you enjoy. There are plenty of fun exercises that you can enjoy with your dog and you’ll be amazed how quickly you feel healthier and how your weight loss speeds up!
Says Rosemary Conley: “We all lead busy lives but I believe that most of us have a ‘will’ to exercise and we understand it’s good for us. When my two bouncing black Labrador pups arrived on the scene, I started to walk them around our garden every morning. Not only does it allow them to burn off some of their boundless energy, it gets me moving. I’m out with them for around 30 minutes and even though the walk is more of an amble rather than a brisk one, I have enjoyed amazing health benefits and have never felt so fit. It’s fantastic!”
Achieving 10,000 steps a day is a goal worth reaching. People who do around 6,000 steps per day on average are more likely to live longer. And those who regularly do 8,000-10,000 steps per day will not only reduce the risk of an early death but also boost their weight-loss progress.
The easiest way to count your steps is to wear a pedometer. Pop it on for just one day and you will be amazed how it raises your awareness and encourages you to add to your total.
How to get started
- Start planning your training programme. If you incorporate dog activities such as agility, heelwork to music or canine cross country into this you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get into shape.
- Invest in a decent pair of trainers. Go to a specialist shop where the staff can advise you on a pair to suit your feet. You should be able to buy a good pair for £50.
- Plan your training times.
- Find a training buddy so that your motivation will be much stronger and you will commit to each other. Your dog is ideal!
Successful slimming
The key to losing weight is not, of course, exercise alone. It is also important that you are eating fewer calories than your body uses up so that you call on your fat stores to make up the difference.
Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Clubs is the only national slimming organisation in the UK to combine diet and exercise in the same class - all for one great value price! Members receive a copy of Rosemary Conley’s highly-effective Fat Attack Booster (FAB) Diet and, in addition to a consultation and weigh in with the class instructor and a 5-minute motivational or informative talk, there is also a 45-minute exercise to music session. The usual cost of joining is £10, plus £5.95* for the weekly class fee.
