Charitable Trust Case Study - Animal Health Trust #2
Final instalment of £25,000 funding towards the ‘Identification of Genetic Markers Linked to Genes for Four Inherited Canine Diseases’.
The Animal Health Trust is a charity that has been helping dogs, cats and horses for more than half a century. They provide specialist veterinary clinical, diagnostic and surgical services and their successes in research have ranged from major breakthroughs in anaesthesia and surgical techniques to the development of vaccines against diseases such as canine distemper and equine influenza. The AHT scientists and veterinarians, many of whom are world leaders in their field, provide a wide range of expertise for a co-ordinated attack on animal diseases and injuries. By publishing scientific papers, speaking at conferences and talking to other veterinary surgeons about the cases dealt with, this knowledge is passed on to benefit the maximum number of animals.
Back in 2003 the KCCT began funding (together with Breed Clubs) the AHT’s investigation into genetic conditions in dogs, with the objective of developing DNA tests which will enable selective breeding away from the condition. The AHT concentrated on eye conditions in four breeds - the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Golden Retriever, the Miniature Bull Terrier and the American Cocker Spaniel
Dr Cathryn Mellersh, the Project Supervisor from the AHT is very satisfied with the outcome of the project and confirmed that “some very compelling results have been generated that will broaden our understanding of the diseases studied.” The results will be used to identify the actual genes involved in these inherited diseases and to develop diagnostic tests. The two most recent specific tests that have been developed at the AHT are for Hereditary Cataract and a disease known as L-2 HGA, both in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
The Charitable Trust is currently evaluating other projects with the AHT and more information will follow in the next newsletter.
