Finding alternative care for your dog while away

Whilst you are away and not able to take your pet with you, it is vital that you find suitable care for your pet.

There are a number of solutions that will work best for you and your pet:

Friends and Family

Usually the best option is to leave your pet with people that it knows well.  Make sure that you leave them with all the information they need including vet details, your contact details and all the things that your pet will need whilst staying away from home, e.g. bed, food, toy, etc.

Petsitters

A number of services have been created to help dog owners to cope with their busy lives.  You can find a recognized Petsitter from the National Association of Registered Petsitters (NARP) or on 0870 3500543 or visit www.dogsit.com

So that you can relax whilst you are away, it is essential that you meet the petsitter in advance of leaving, check any references, insurance cover and leave up to date contact details.

Boarding Kennels

This form of care will suit some dogs, but not all.  The best advice when considering leaving your pet with a kennel is to visit the establishment on your own and have a good look around and chat with the owner or staff.  If you like what you see then you may wish to try them out, the best endorsement of course would be from any friend or family member who had already used their services.

For more information on finding a good boarding kennel contact the Animal Boarding Advice Bureau on 01606 891303.
