Will Your Dog Take Centre Stage At Discover Dogs?
Your dog can bathe in the limelight this November at London’s leading dog event, Discover Dogs 2010 at Earls Court. Any dog can compete for the title of Best Dog or Bitch in the Companion Dog Club Competition, regardless of whether they are a crossbreed or purebred.
Entry to the competition is open until September 24th, and is exclusively for members of the Kennel Club’s Companion Dog Club. If you’re not already a member, there’s still time to join for just £12 and then enter the competition.
Held on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th November, the competition will see hundreds of dog of all ages, shapes and sizes step into the ring to compete in a series of fun categories. The dogs are split by sex, with the boys taking centre stage on Saturday 13th, and the girls following suit on Sunday 14th. There are now eleven classes to choose from:
Novelty Classes
• Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog – Saturday 13 November
• Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch – Sunday 14 November
• Waggiest Tail – the dog with the wiggliest, waggiest tail!
• Best Rescue – The canine companion who has had the most successful re-homing experience. Judges will look at the relationship between dog and owner, plus the dog’s general behaviour.
• Best Buddies (Child handler under 12) – Where the child and dog are the best of friends. Judges will look at the relationship between dog and child; children may be accompanied by an adult in the ring
• Most Appealing Look – The happiest healthy dog with the most appealing look.
• Best Canine Carer – The canine companion who helps its owner in any way from an assistance dog to just giving loads of love. Judges will look at the relationship between dog and owner, plus the dog’s general behaviour.
Purebreed Classes - open to any breed of purebred dog
• Any Variety Sporting: Hound, Gundog, Terrier
• Any Variety Non Sporting: Toy, Utility, Working, Pastoral
Judging the classes will be renowned behaviourists Carolyn Menteith and Annette Conn. The judges will take into account the importance of dog training and responsible dog ownership as well as looks, and will judge the entrants on good character, health and temperament across the two days.
Caroline Kisko, Communications Director at the Kennel Club, said: “The Companion Dog Club is the ultimate club for dog lovers, as it doesn’t matter if your dog is purebred or a crossbreed. With the Companion Dog Club, all that matters is your extra special dog!”
The competition is held in support of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust which looks after the health and welfare of all dogs and so there is a class entry fee of £1 per class. The Kennel Club Charitable Trust funds a wide variety of work ranging from supporting research into canine diseases, dog welfare organisations and the promotion of support dogs, all of which give dogs a healthier and happier life.
