The Kennel Club Arts Foundation Acquires Important Chow Chow Memorabilia

The Kennel Club Arts Foundation has recently acquired three new pieces of art and memorabilia which detail more than a hundred years of the Chow Chow breed’s history in Great Britain.

Silver Chow Chow - Ch Blue BloodA model of a silver Chow Chow that once belonged to breed pioneer, Lady Armyne Faudel-Phillips, is now on display in the Kennel Club Art Gallery. The piece was originally created as a wedding present, given to Lady Faudel-Phillips on her marriage in 1908. This Silver Chow was modelled on Ch Blue Blood, born in 1893, who is said to have been instrumental in the development of blue Chows.

Blue Blood was owned and bred by Lady Gordon, Armyne’s mother. Both women made a major contribution to the Chow breed in this country. Together they founded the Chow Chow Club in 1895, their dogs contributing to development of the Chow in the United Kingdom when the breed was competing in the foreign dog classes. Lady Gordon’s first Chow Chow was given to her by the Marquis of Huntley who, with the Earl of Lonsdale, had imported some of the best specimens from China.

In addition to the silver Chow Chow model, the Foundation has also acquired the Ch Genghis Khan trophy. The trophy was first awarded to Miss Anna Peck’s Ch Chefoo in 1928. It was subsequently won four times by Lady Faudel-Phillips, and last awarded to Ch Peng Tse of Amwell.

The third new acquisition is a Henry Crowther painting from 1925. The painting shows Ch Pei Woong of Amwell who became a Champion in 1924. She was again owned by Lady Faudel-Phillips and won a total of four Challenge Certificates. This piece is currently being restored, in preparation for display.

The silver Chow model is available to view by appointment between Monday and Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm at the Kennel Club Art Gallery.
