Success For Novice Handlers At Pointer Club’s Field Trial
A total of 38 novice handlers competed at the Pointer Club’s Puppy and Novice Stakes, held on 12 July at Lauder in the Scottish Borders.
The field trial saw Susan Stone Amport, from Switzerland, and her Irish Setter, Coppersheen Coalville Lad, receive a Certificate of Merit in the Novice Stake. The pair went on to achieve a second certificate the next day at the Dukeries (Notts) Gundog Club’s Trial in what is the pair’s first season of trials in the UK.
Eight of the competitors had previously attended a Kennel Club Pointing Breeds Training Weekend, including the winner of the Puppy Stake, Liz Osborne and her Pointer, Upperwood Baroness.
The Novice Stakes is a wonderful example of the Kennel Club’s Fit For Function: Fit For Life campaign, which aims to ensure that every dog should be fit enough to perform the original function for which it was historically bred. Field Trial events, such as the Novice Stakes at Lauder, demonstrate the true duality of the gundog, fulfilling their natural function as a working breed and therefore enabling them to lead healthier and happier lives.
