Harvey is Crowned Best Dog in Companion Dog Club Competition at Discover Dogs

Harvey, a crossbreed aged seven from Hitchin in Hertfordshire has been named overall Best Dog in the grand final of the Companion Dog Club Competition at London’s leading dog event, Discover Dogs 2009, held at a packed Earls Court.

Emma and harvey with Carolyn Mentieth and Peter PurvesRenowned canine behaviourist, trainer and author, Carolyn Menteith, who judged the competition, congratulated owner Emma Tripp at Earls Court yesterday on their amazing achievement. Former Blue Peter presenter Peter Purves was on hand to deliver commentary on the hotly-contested grand final.

Harvey was crowned overall Best Dog after winning the Most Appealing Eyes category of the competition. He was bought to Hertfordshire from a Rescue Centre in Middlesbrough when he was 7 months and has been Emma’s best friend ever since.

Emma Tripp said: “When we got him from the rescue centre he was timid at first, but soon he came out of his shell and started to really enjoy life.

“He’s an amazing dog and I’m so happy he’s won this award I can’t believe it!”

The competition saw hundreds of dog of all ages, shapes and sizes step into the ring to compete in a series of fun categories. The dogs are split by sex; on Saturday the girls took centre stage as Polly Anna, a Shih Tzu/Poodle cross aged seven from Broadstairs was named overall Best Bitch.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson, said: “The Companion Dog Club competition is always one of the great highlights of Discover Dogs as it gives all kinds of dogs the chance to shine.

“It’s clear to see Harvey is a special dog and congratulations go to him and Emma on a marvellous victory.”
