Shadow Minister Launches National Microchipping Month
Shadow Minister Richard Benyon MP has teamed up with Petlog to urge all pet owners to have their pets microchipped as part of National Microchipping Month 2009 throughout June.
Mr Benyon, Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Wildlife and Animal Welfare, launched the month-long campaign at Dogs Trust in his constituency of Newbury today, by scanning dogs and checking for their unique ID which is held on the UK’s largest pet database, Petlog.
National Microchipping Month aims to encourage and promote responsible pet ownership through microchipping as the preferred method of permanent pet identification. The scheme is run by Petlog, which is owned and managed by the Kennel Club and has over 3.7m pets registered, with 40,000 new pets added to the database each month.
Caroline Kisko, Communications Director at the Kennel Club, said: “The importance of microchipping your beloved pet cannot be underestimated, and throughout June we aim to show more people than ever just how quick and easy the process is. We are glad to be working alongside Dogs Trust and high profile politicians to promote responsible pet ownership and microchipping as the preferred method of identification.”
Clarissa Baldwin, Dogs Trust Chief Executive, said: “Microchipping is a huge part of being a responsible dog owner. Dogs Trust is asking for the support and backing of all politicians in our push for compulsory microchipping. All dogs deserve to have the chance to be reunited with their owners and all owners should have peace of mind that they will increase the chance of finding their dog should they get lost. The one off cost of microchipping a dog is a small price to pay for a lifetime of security.”
Richard Benyon, Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Wildlife and Animal Welfare, and MP for Newbury, said: “Unfortunately, there have been a number of animal thefts in the West Berkshire area and across the country. Microchipping can be an invaluable tool for tracing the owner should the animal later be found either through a vet or end up in a rescue centre such as Dogs Trust. It’s very distressing for any owner to lose a treasured pet, but microchipping gives peace of mind that, should they become separated, they may hopefully be easily reunited.”
Petlog will be running further events throughout June to promote National Microchipping month – to find out more information or to get involved visit www.nationalmicrochippingmonth.org.uk.
