Kennel Club Review of Breed Standards
In January 2009, the Kennel Club's review of Breed Standards led to the introduction of a number of interim amendments to Breed Standards, on which breed clubs were invited to provide feedback during the first six months of the year.
The Kennel Club is currently collating the responses, for review by the Breed Health and Welfare Strategy Group and the Breed Standards Sub-Committee. Whilst 30th June is the deadline by which clubs are requested to respond, it is unlikely that any further change to standards will be made until the early autumn, as the review process will be detailed, possibly requiring further consultation with some breeds.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson, said, “We are pleased that many clubs have been supportive of our aims and submitted clear, reasoned responses on the changes made. Indeed some clubs have gone even further by suggesting wording in other areas of their standards, to emphasise health issues.
“We hope that at the end of the process, we will have arrived at Breed Standards which place even greater emphasis on the importance of health whilst of course preserving breed type.”
Breed clubs are reminded that their comments should be submitted to Mrs C Hallett, Registered Societies Manager, Kennel Club, 1-5 Clarges Street, London W1J 8AB by 30th June 2009.
