Obedience Regulation Amendments with Effect from 1 January 2009

Provision of Stewards

Following the ‘Help at Shows’ Working Party set up by the Obedience Liaison Council, the General Committee has amended the Regulations which specify who is responsible for arranging stewards at obedience shows.  It was acknowledged that in some instances judges did not find their own stewards and often did not inform the society that they required a steward.  The following Regulation amendments have been introduced to put more onus on the judge to provide their own steward.

Regulation G.30.l

FROM:

The Show Management shall ensure that Caller Stewards are appointed for each class scheduled and these Stewards, together with any Scribe Stewards used by judges at the show, must not work a dog on the same day.

TO:

Judges should, whenever possible, provide their own Caller Stewards, but the Show Management shall provide any Caller Stewards if necessary. Caller and Scribe Stewards used by judges at the show must not work a dog on the same day.

Regulation G.33.o

INSERT:

Judges should, whenever possible, provide their own Stewards.

(Insert new sub-paragraph)

Stay Exercises

The General Committee also reviewed the question surrounding handlers working two or more dogs in the stay exercise, as it appeared that the Regulations had been interpreted in different ways. In stay exercises when a handler had more than one dog some handlers would place both dogs on their left hand side, whilst others would stand in between their dogs.  Judges had marked this differently, some not minding, some advising handlers to place both dogs on their left and some judges faulting the stays without warning the handler in advance.

The General Committee has therefore amended the Regulations to give handlers the choice when working more than one dog of where to place their dogs when in the stay exercise.

Regulation G.35.g

FROM:

In all classes the handler may use the dog’s name with a command or signal without penalty. All tests shall commence and finish with the dog sitting on the handler’s left side except in the Stay Tests and Distance Control and in Beginners, Novice and Class A Recall Tests when the dog may be left in either the Sit or Down position at the handler’s choice.
(Delete underlined)

TO:

In all classes the handler may use the dog’s name with a command or signal without penalty. All tests shall commence and finish with the dog sitting on the handler’s left side except in Distant Control and in Beginners, Novice and Class A Recall Tests when the dog may be left in either the Sit or Down position at the handler’s choice.  In the Stay Test a handler working more than one dog may choose to leave all dogs on left hand side, with a reasonable distance between them, or to position the dogs on his/her left and right hand side.

Regulation G(C).1.c

FROM:

In all tests the left side of a handler will be regarded as the "working side" unless the handler suffers from a physical disability and has the judge's permission to work the dog on the right hand side.

TO:

In all tests the left side of a handler will be regarded as the "working side" unless:

(1) the handler suffers from a physical disability and has the judge's permission to work the dog on the right hand side, or

(2) the handler is working more than one dog in a stay exercise.
