Accredited Breeder Scheme Goes From Strength To Strength

The Kennel Club’s Accredited Breeder Scheme celebrated another milestone last week when Anita Bax, of Chobham in Surrey, became the 2,500th member to join the scheme.

The achievement was marked with a presentation of an framed Accredited Breeder certificate to Anita Bax, at the Windsor Dog Show on Sunday, where she also celebrated her Reserve CC win with her apricot Toy Poodle, Saltillo Suger Suger at Taladayga.

Anita Bax, who breeds Standard and Toy Poodles under the Taladayga and Lotsmoor Kennel Names, commented: “I am very proud to become the Kennel Club’s 2,500th Accredited Breeder. The premise of the scheme is a very laudable one and I am glad to be able to give my input as a member of the scheme in order to help it develop. I have always followed responsible breeding practices and am pleased to be associated with a scheme that is dedicated to promoting this cause.”

Launched at Crufts in 2004, the scheme aims to become a central port of call for potential puppy buyers who are looking for responsible breeders. All Accredited Breeders have agreed to follow recommended guidelines, laid down by the Kennel Club. These currently include the permanent identification of breeding stock (by DNA profile, microchip or tattoo), health-testing under the relevant Kennel Club health schemes and supplying new puppy buyers with information on all aspects of owning a new puppy..
“This is an important milestone for us and we are absolutely delighted that so many breeders have wanted to support this initiative”, said Bill Lambert, Health and Breeder Services Manager.

“The Accredited Breeder Scheme is, first and foremost, about promoting responsible breeding practices. Everybody on the scheme has agreed to follow our guidelines and we monitor our members – through breeder advisor visits and feedback from puppy buyers, to ensure that they maintain the standards set.

“In addition to monitoring the quality of our members, our aim has to be to encourage more and more responsible breeders into the scheme. We clearly have a long way to go but it is crucial that we get convincing numbers of breeders to join the scheme so that we are in a good position to demonstrate the viability of self-government.

“There are so many responsible breeders out there, who already follow recommended breeding guidelines, so we urge them to come forward and give us their support.

“By gathering a comprehensive list of responsible breeders we will give the general public, who might not otherwise know where to turn, a way to differentiate between irresponsible breeders and those that have agreed to put the welfare of dogs at the forefront of their minds.

“We are extremely grateful to all of the breeders, such as Anita Bax, who are helping us to make this scheme a success.”
