Kennel Club Fact File - A43 Disciplinary Case

At its meeting on 26 June 2008 the Disciplinary Sub-Committee considered the conviction of
Mrs Valerie Whitehouse of Knighton Powys from Llandrindod Wells Magistrates Court in
September 2007 (and on appeal at the Cardiff Crown Court on 21 December 2007) for offences of causing unnecessary suffering to Great Dane Puppies.

The Committee imposed the following penalties:

To disqualify her from exhibiting at, taking part in, attending and/or having any connection with any event licensed by the Club. If any person disqualified under this sub-paragraph shall attend any canine event whilst disqualified the General Committee shall have the power to increase the period of disqualification.

To disqualify her from being or becoming a member of any canine club or society registered with or affiliated to the Kennel Club

To disqualify her from acting as an Officer or serving on the committee of any canine society

[A42 j (6)]

To disqualify her from taking part in the management of any event licensed by the club.

To disqualify her from judging at any event licensed by the Club

To disqualify her from effecting registrations of any or all dogs

and/or progeny of such dogs which are owned and/or registered by

him (whether or not jointly owned and/or whether or not owned

and/or registered in the name of a nominee)

The suspensions and disqualifications are to be for a period of Six (6) years from
26 June 2008.

The Committee, following the impositions of these penalties, would draw the attention of the Respondent to the effect of Rule A 42 sub-section n.

This case demonstrates how easy it is for breeders to lose control, particularly with rapidly growing breeds where nutrition is a very difficult thing to balance.

A heavy parasitic infection in young puppies can tip the balance between health and serious illness.

However, the Committee would have expected an experienced breeder to have reacted to the situation in a more timely manner and in consequence the Committee was disappointed with the situation which developed in this case.
