The Kennel Club is set to change the name of one of its key departments so that it can remain focused on those issues that are relevant to dog owners and breeders, including DNA profiling, health screening and the Accredited Breeder Scheme.

From 1^st May the Health and Information Department will change its name to the Health and Breeder Services Department, to reflect the main areas of its work - the Accredited Breeder Scheme, Health Co-ordination, and other related services.

Although the department is still the Kennel Club’s core information hub, more and more people are turning to the Kennel Club website for general information; giving the team time to respond to the 500 emails, 50 letters and 200 phone calls it receives each week, normally from breeders and their puppy buyers.

One of the core functions of this department is to implement the Accredited Breeder Scheme, which now has 2,500 members, and the name change reflects the importance of this scheme in the team’s daily work.

Health schemes, quarterly statistics, technical registrations issues and liaison with outside agencies are some of the other major issues that the department deals with on a day-to-day basis.

Bill Lambert, Health and Breeder Services Manager, said: “The name change of the department reflects the kind of work we do and the kind of issues that are important to the people who contact us. The Accredited Breeder Scheme, for example, is continuing to gain momentum and we are fielding lots of inquiries in this area, at the same time as dealing with issues ranging from health screening to DNA profiling.

“The work that the department does will not alter as a result of this name change - it simply reflects the evolution that has already occurred and will ensure that the work that is performed remains relevant.”
